Ipod touch wifi troubleshooting

Most popular post on this blog is about ipod touch wifi (here) and I would like to give you couple of tips and tricks how to troubleshoot your ipod touch wireless connection.

First what you want to do is connect to your wireless connection .

Click On Settings>WiFi>Turn WiFi ON. Make sure you are connecting to YOUR wireless connection , check what is the name of your ssid(wireless name) on your router.

Before you connect to your wireless connection check if your connection is secured or not. To do that follow, the steps above once you found your wireless.
If there is a LOCK image that means your connection is secured, from this point you want to get that WEP or WAP key from your wireless router.

Connecting to your wireless network with Ipod Touch

If asked for password enter your WEP or WAP key and click on Join button, wait few moments and then see if you are connected. Test with your safari browser.

Can't connect to wireless network?

Few things you can check:

Did you get an IP address from your wireless router?
Unplug the power from your router shut down your ipod touch. Plug back in your router first, then wait for 1 minute and then turn on your Ipod Touch.

You are not getting an IP at all?
Are you sure you are connected to your wireless router?
Does your router have MAC address filtering On?
Did you enter correct Password (WEP-WAP key)?

Few more things to check...
Does your homepage work?
Did you try yahoo.com google.com ebay.com etc?
How about your YouTube do you get any videos?

As advised by Linksys I have altered my security setting for my router from WEP to WPA2 personal and the ipod touch still 'cannot find server' and clearly finds the wireless network OK with full signal. I have re-set all the settings on the ipod and tried manually to put in an IP address and have also spoken to apple who could not help. I don't know what to do next. Could the issue lie with my broadband provider?

hey mate, I've got the same problem as u. I tried the same things, reseting the Ipod, router etc. all the things that are mentioned in the previous topics, even changed my router for no passwords, runnin out of ideas what else to do. hmm is this caused by the channel on which my wireless network broadcasts the signal? I use channel 11 by the way. what's yours? Dodgey Ipod man. I will go to the shop where I bought it and and try find a solution, I'll let u know how it goes.

Anonymous said...

Yea I had the same issue, but i can garuntee that your broadband provider doesnt have anything to do with it. that is, unless you cant get anything in your home to connect to the internet. but anyways, ive tried using every WEP key my router genenrated, i dont have a MAC filter, and so im stuck. it would seem as though it was a DNS error, but i have no clue how to take care of it

I had the same problem today after getting my ipod, but strangely enough a firmware update fixed it, I have a linksys WRT54G and that did the trick. Give it a shot.

I've typed in the right password, and it claims I'm connected to my network, but it shows no signal at the top and 'can't find the server'

despite being connected to BT Voyager...

I had the same problem as you all you have to do is change your security settings to wap. You probably have it set to wep. I am posting from my iPod touch now!

Anonymous said...

hi all, where do you put the WEP code?

Anonymous said...

i was having these issues too so what I did was turned off my router and modem and reset my router up like it as brand new. I put the cd it came with in and followed the instructions and qhwn I configured the router I didn't use a wep or wap and went unprotected on my router and now I'm posting this from my iPod touch I hope this helps

Anonymous said...

hey i had the same issues you guys have been having so i tried this. I went to my router and unplugged everything and unplugged the modem. Then i took the CD that came with my router put it in the computer and ran it like i just got my router and was setting it up for the first time. When it asked me about security settings i opted to try and go without them to see if it would work so after that the computer configured my router i turned my ipod touch on and was able to connect and safari youtube and itunes was working. i hope this helps.

Hi, I got mine working today on a older Linksys WRT54G V1.1 router. While I did update the firmware, I'm not sure that was the answer. What I think was the answer is to make sure you keep the caps lock (shift)key set when you are entering the 26 digit WEP key. So when you are entering something like C4F2ABC90... You have to keep setting the shift to being illuminated each time you toggle between numeric and charachter(sp?) mode. GLTA

Hi,I've keep putting my WEP key in but it still says incorrect passwork for wirless. I'm not sure if im puting in the right thing but can someone help me with my problem?

Anonymous said...

I had the same problem as you guys, and jumped through hoops trying to fix it. Called Apple, they took the iPod touch back and found a hardware problem, and gave me another one. THis one works fine. My advice - get Apple to replace your iPods. I still have trouble getting onto commercial wifi but it works at home without any problem.

My guess is the iPod Touch is a bit hit and miss as far as wifi is concerned - and there may be quite a few malfunctioning ones out there.

I bought an ipod touch yesterday and had similar problems connecting to safari/youtube to the ones listed here. Your blog post helped a lot thanks!

When the ipod asks for your password, enter Linksys' "Encryption Key" (Accessable from the "support" tab of Linksys EasyLink Advisor) instead of the network's password. This worked for me, although I messed with the network password and all that WEP, WPA2 junk before this and it may have had some impact as well. GOOD LUCK AND DON'T GIVE UP!!

Anonymous said...

The last entry "When the ipod asks for your password, enter Linksys' "Encryption Key" (Accessable from the "support" tab of Linksys EasyLink Advisor) instead of the network's password. DON'T GIVE UP!!" worked for me too! I work in the software field so I tried everything I would have done for any other hardware or software. I uninstalled reinstalled the router. I download the 8.002 update from Linksys. I tried eveything Apple said to try. Upset Apple does not have this info on their website. Touch worked fine without security feature turned on but didn't want that. Glad I took the time to enter the encryption key! Keep at it!

Anonymous said...

I had the same problem. But I don't have Linksys and i don't have to have a password. It shows that i have a full wireless signal, but when i try to go to a site it says that it can't find the server. Any tips?

Anonymous said...

I use a Linksys WRT54G v5 router. I altered the security settings for my router from WEP to WPA2 but my iPod Touch still could not connect to wifi!

Next thing I did was to upgrade the firmware for my router. And this solved the connection problems!

Try it out.

Thanks for the this info. I followed the advice from above. Instead of entering the passphrase for my WEP encrypted password, I entered "Key 1" from the wireless security page from my router admin page. The router is a Linksys WRT300N. It works great.

Anonymous said...

My problem is more of a nuisance. I entered the SSID, the key, and my iTouch would connect to the router. I'd be surfing the net or be on iTunes for maybe about 5-10 minutes, then it'd disconnect from the router. Maybe 5 seconds later, it'd reconnect, only it would stay connected to the router for maybe a minute at the most before it disconnected again. It's quite annoying. Is this a problem with my iTouch or my router? Because during the times it's connected to my router, it can acess the internet. So I'm not quite sure.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous(last): You have to upgrade your linksys router firmware or whatever router you have.

It's disconnecting because of it...

Anonymous said...

For me the hint about putting in the password using capital letter was what made the difference. Thanks. this community did much better than Apple's support page.

Anonymous said...

Had the same problem. it connected but did not get ip dns etc. the issue was to insert the wep pwd as hex (not asci) and worked fine -- use http://centricle.com/tools/ascii-hex/ to translate asci2hex if you like to ive a try. router -- linksys with wep encription

Anonymous said...

Go to Linksys and update your firmware to 1.52.5.002 it adds some stuff to help with the router compatibly.

Hey to everyone with iPod Touch Wifi Problems. I have just spent the whole day trying to sort mine out, and it was a very simple thing to do!! I grabbed the Touch as soon as it was @ 32BG, and was fine for a few months on a D-Link DI-524, until my power-out. Done all the resets but unable to log into my router. No mater what i changed at both ends, i kept constantly getting: "UNABLE TO CONNECT TO NETWORK JAMIE". I could login to my neighbors network quite easily if i wanted, and worked fine with no security settings! So called Apple back a second time, and a couple hours help form >>TIER-TWO<< apple support, we finally found that i was using the same network name with a different password, and the iPhone/iPodTouch is designed to remember your last settings for automatic connection! even after 2 Restores of the iPod! So if anyone has a similar issue, try pressing the: "IGNORE THIS NETWORK" button in your network name WiFi settings on the Touch, and this effectively clears the iPods auto settings, and start a fresh! The other ting i have found is that the Touch needs the: DHCP RENEW LEASE button tickled regularly, as advised by apples help page: TIPS WHEN USING WIFI. This wireless stuff is crazy man! Where is the Internet's 2.0? Hope this helps some. Jamie, Melbourne, Australia.

hey Ive had my touch for about 2 months. lately its been shutting down the Internet without notice. I would go to a website or two and it would black out and go to the front screen while I was in the middle of something. if anyone has a solution to this problem please email me at rocknrun18@yahoo.com. thank you

I have tried everything i feel, thank god im switching back to cable rather than this horrible dsl. Any hints out there for wireless modem connections would be huge.

Hey. I've changed the wireless p/w from WAP Personal to WEP, and it still doesn't work. What I mean by doesn't work is that I can connect, but all the fields are blank. (EG. IP Address, Subnet Mask, etc.)

Help please.
I'm thinking about updating the firmware tomorrow to check if it'll work.

Also, my wireless worked sometimes before, like on and off. It also works at my friend's house too. It's kinda odd. >.<

I've been bumming off of my neighbors Wi-Fi for months now, and all of a sudden its not working right. I think it may be a problem with my Touch, but I cant be sure, nor can I mess around with the router as its not mine.
I can connect to the internet, and the bars on top are all there. But when I go to actually load a page, after a moment I get a message saying "Safari cant open the page because it cant find the server."
I've had this problem before, but it usually goes back to normal after a minute. Its been a few days now, and it still wont work.
Suggestions?

Hi the internet on my ipod touch doesn't seem to be working either. Well i DO connect to the internet BUT when i try enterting safari or youtube the little blue icon disappears and i'm "unable to connect to the sever". Help please?

All that you need to do is follow these steps... I do not know why it works, but it does. I worked for weeks after the disappointment of getting my new iTouch just to find that wi-fi did not work. Just follow these steps to solve the problem...
* Go to Settings.
* Select Wi-Fi.
* Chose a network.
* Select the blue arrow next to the network you are connected to.
* Select DNS.
* Change the IP Address to 208.67.222.222

I have been EXTREMELY frustrated with this iPOd touch (32G)! I cannot get reliable connection to my home network! It comes and goes. I have restored the iPod, synced it, exported bookmarks to it, entered the network key, etc., last night it worked, today it wouldn't. then now it's working again! I thought Apple was suposed to ne soOooo reliable! I need to be able to count on this thing! Any one else have similiar issues?

Anonymous said...

Seriously guys - I thought my ipod internet was malfunctioning as I must have put the WEP code in a billion times with it just saying incorrect password. Then I realised you have to enter the letters in CAPITAL letters, and the default is lower-case. You have to hit the shift key before each letter entry! Worked for me.

Trouble: No WiFi addresses showing as being avaialble for my iPod Touch.
Solution that worked for me from Apple website:

Reset the network settings for your iPod touch or iPhone

In some cases you may need to reset the network settings for your device. To do this, choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Worked for me instantly!

I just got my iPod touch for Christmas. When I am at my house it gives me two networks most of the time. Both of these networks have the lock image next to them but they both show that I have wi-fi connection but when I go to Safari it tells me it is unable to connect with internet. Every once in a while i get linksys but that is only if I am in my room, I don't get it anywhere else. Last night I got wi-fi connection with the other two networks and I used safari and it was fine but today it is not working. I don't know what to do, is there anyone who can help me?

I have had my iPod Touch (32Gb "nd gen) since Christmas and had no problem what so ever connecting to my NetGear WNR854T router and using the WiFi functions until the early hours of New Years day. Having had my iPOd charging on my Sony dock system I undocked and tried to access my email, only to receive the message that there was no WiFi. Using my laptop to rule out the router being the problem I realised this was an issue with the WiFi in my Touch. After multiple resets (Network and full unit - including one where I thought it would never boot past the apple logo screen) from the settings screen my WiFi returned (who knows for how long though)...has anybody else had this problem?

I have a wireless router, and it worked fine for a bit. but now it doesn't show up on my ipod. several other wifi networks do show up.

when i use WiFinder, i can see my network but it doesn't show its name. If i turn of security and leave it open, i can connect to it, but the ipod says its not connected to anything. it doesn't show up in the main menu.

Anonymous said...

Here is how to fix the problem, use your router's CD to turn off the security, and once that is done, go back into your router settings (192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1) and then turn security back on. It worked for my belkin and ipod.

iPod Touch 2nd Generation: the root cause of wifi connection failure.

My iTouch with latest firmware version failed to connect to my home wireless network. After checking the logs in the wireless router, I found its 802.1x daemon always rejects iTouch's attempt. Error message:
15:32:45 wlan0: A STA is rejected by 802.1x daemon - xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
- where xx:xx:xx:xx:xx is the MAC address of my iTouch.

So the solution is to disable 802.1x daemon in the router.

802.1x is turned on or off in different combinations of authentication/encryption/pre-shared-key settings. My router does not support WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, therefore 802.1x daemon is always activated when encryption type is set to WPA/WPA2. Hence I downgrade the setting to Shared/WEP/manual-key, which disables 802.1x. After applying the change, iTouch connected without a single failure.

I did not crack iTouch's WIFI authentication system. It seems to me that the "greatest" firmware of iTouch 2nd gen does not coded well to support 802.1x authentication. It could be a bug of Apple.

If anybody had hardness in iTouch WIFI connection, the Apple tech support guy always suggests to try your luck by turning your iTouch or router on and off. That's mojo, not computer science. :-) I'd suggest: check your wireless router manual, find the right combination to disable the 802.1x authentication daemon. That's the once for all solution to end the pain.

I can't seem to connect to WiFi anymore. It worked 2 days ago then just stopped. When I go to WiFi Networks it can't find the networks that are there. I know the WiFi itself is fine because I can get on it with my computer. This isn't just one network that isn't working, I can't get on any network. At first I thought it was the router but then I realized only my ipod touch was having the problem. Any ideas? I would love the help.

I have a WRT54GS v3 with latest firmware. With our 16 GB iPod touch, we have also had trouble connecting using DHCP. So, what
has worked is using a Static IP
address on our home network, and
using 1 of the OpenDNS IP addresses.
Now we can reliably connect at home.

I don't know if the problem is an overly fussy DHCP client on the iPod touch, or a non-standard DHCP server from the linksys side (but both a Windows Vista laptop and Windows XP laptop connect fine).

Whichever, you'd think that linksys (Cisco) and Apple would try testing their stuff together once in a while (some of these comments go back two years!).

Anonymous said...

My man I owe you a beer.

"the Apple tech support guy always suggests to try your luck by turning your iTouch or router on and off. That's mojo, not computer science. :-) "

Well actually, it's not mojo. Sometimes resetting the hardware allows buffers to flush and corrupt memory to clear upon "reboot".

For what it's worth, I've got a computer science degree and have been an IT consultant for 20 years and sort of "forgot" this simple little fact. So for the past day or so have been fighting with my iPod and router... changing settings and addresses on both devices (iPod and router) to no avail.

This morning, a simple shutdown/restart (hold the power switch for a while) of the iPod solved the problem! Back on wireless again :-)

"When in doubt - reboot" Really is not such a bad thought.

I had similar probs with my 2nd gen iPod touch and NetGear router - full strength signal, padlock icon, IP address and subnet mask populated (router and DNS blank), but the no connection error message in Safari.

My router was using WEP encryption with key index #4. It doesn't seem that you can switch the iPod wifi to use any other WEP key index unlike my laptop or PS3. I guess it uses key index #1 only.

My resolution was to log in to the router (using the ethernet cable) and under wireless settings, change the WEP key from key #4 to key #1, apply and restart the router then update the laptop to use that key index.
I kept the actual 26 char key the same so no need to forget the network and re-add.

After a Renew Lease on the iPod, the IP address, subnet mask, router and DNS were updated. Router and DNS populated with the router admin IP address 192.168.0.1

If having connection issues and using WEP, its worth checking the key index of your wireless network is set to index #1.

I configured my D_link DIR-615 router this way to connect with my Ipod Touch

WPS disabled
Security Mode: WPA Personal
WPA Mode: Auto (WPA or WPA2)
Cypher Type: TKIP and AES

Instructed Touch to forget the network I am connecting to,
back out and go back to network, enter password or key on the Touch

I believe the cypher type has been much of my trouble, however I am an amateur at this stuff.

I tried lots of the usual fixes. Like resetting the ipod touch (2nd G)network setting etc etc. After spending far to much time on this I then upgrade my firmware on my Linksys wrt54gs, and hey presto I can get wifi again on my ipod..

After an hour of messing with my Ipod Touch, all I needed to do was update the firmware on my router and boom everything works and I am so very happy.

I have had similar problems as described above and can add this experience:
When using WEP, the ipod does not ask for which key is being input(1-4) and it does not like ASCII generated keys. When I tried to play with the WEP settings, it would just assign itself a FAKE ip address and not work.

When I reset the Dlink back to basic WEP and input a HEX key it would work again. I learned this as I was trying to get WPA running. In the process I manged to get the ipod going with WPA2 but my old Linux machine with the Cisco 80211.b machine wouldn't play - in the process of running permutations to fix the ubuntu machine, I broke the ipod connection and figured out the above.

I have also had problems connecting to my friends house - I couldn't trouble shoot there because he didn't know his cable modem admin p/w but I suspect a similar key-type problem. my 2c

Ok, so im only 15 so i'm not really with all this stuff. I have d-link internet connection, i can use wireless with my laptop and my ipod connected to an unsecure network. My ipod comes up with the wireless sign at the top with full signal, but when i try and go on safari or youtube it comes up with 'Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet.' Everyone keeps talking about Wep but i don't know how to find that code. On the wireless on my Ipod it comes up with the IP Adress and Subnet Mask but it will not come up with the router etc. The IP Adress and Subnet Mask also dissappears after a while. If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

I'd rather not go out and buy a $40-$50 router....(i'm 12 can't go anyways)
I read some solutions others gave but they don't seem to help me. One more thing if you do reset the router would it reset everything on your computer or laptop? Plzs reply back soon :S :S

How do I connect my IPod Touch to my home Wireless Network?

I just got an iPod Touch and I am trying to connect it to my wireless network. I am using a Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router. The router was using the highest security setting, WPA / WPA2. It recognizes my home network and I tried putting in the password 3 times and the Itouch says "cannot join network". Currently, I have the security turned off and the iPodtouch works fine, and connects to the internet. What could be wrong?

ive been having a problem just recently with my ipod touch. ive had it for a long while now and its never had problems connecting to the internet at any location that has been unsecured until now. i would always go on at home, but i just returned from a long trip without wifi. now it will say its connected to NETGEAR (my network), but it can't open safari or facebook or anything because it says it has to internet connection. the little symbol that shows how well youre connected goes on and off, and even when its showing up im still not getting online.

why is this happening all of a sudden? i havent changed anything about my home network, and ive connected other places fine, and some places are just like this now.

help?

Thanks! I read through the (lengthy) chain and tried a combination of selected solutions:
- Entered the iTouch's MAC address in the Philips router
- Cleared the connection on the iTouch ("forget the connection")
- Used the first of my four WEP passwords
- Entered 208.67.222.222 as DNS.

It worked immediately. Thanks to all who contributed!

Heres something you might want to try for all of you that just cant connect.

Even if the touch sees the connection, you might have your router set to be using wireless N only, or some other setting that your touch wont be able to use.

I had this problem tonight. Went through all the settings, put in the passwords many times, and it still would not connect.

It did connect when I reset the router to its default settings, with NO security, but as soon as I put in a password .. no go. I fiddled with it only to remember that yes, while my Macbook can run with Wireless N, the ipod touch can only use wireless G.

After changing that setting in my routers setup, everything went back to normal. Whew. Hope that helps someone.

Anonymous said...

Just saying thanks! I would never have realised I had to enter the WEP key as the password. Worked instantly!

I have tried many if not all of the tricks mentioned in this blog and I still can't get my brand new 32Gb iPod Touch to connect to my home WiFi. I am confined to using 128-bit WEP encryption. I have tried the following: (1) entering the 26-digit hex code, with and without a dollar sign at the beginning, (2) entering the pass phrase - even changed it to be exactly 13 characters using only a-z, 0-9 - and tried it with and without the dollar sign at the beginning, (3) entering the 26-digit hex code in all caps versus lowercase, with and without the dollar sign at the beginning, and (4) a firmware update to my Belkin router (in combination with all of the above). NO SUCCESS. Two Apple technicians tried to help, but gave no helpful suggestions (I don't think they knew what a hexadecimal code was, so that time was wasted). I tried adding my home network as a new network and selected "WEP" under "Security" and still no luck. My iTouch will connect if I disable encryption on my router, but I do not want to run that way. I also do not want to buy a new router just to avoid using WEP encryption. Does anyone have any suggestions for something I may have forgotten to try?

I was messing around with securing my router today to WPA2 Personal (a Linksys WRT54G v2.0) to add security to my network. I decided to make some changes to the wireless settings thinking I was doing good things. Having a few other wireless signals in the area I thought it prudent to change the broadcast channel to 11. My iPod Touch 2Gen would not connect even after making it forget to original network settings. Changing the broadcast channel back to 6 connected everytime without a hitch, I guess it doesn't like the other channels. Just wanted to add this as another part of the equation if you still have problems working with the other posts here. Hope I saved somebody a little trouble down the road.

Unknown said...

I decided to secure my Linksys WRT54G v2.0 router today (finally). While in the settings I decided to change the broadcast channel to 11 from 6 due to other routers closeby. After following tips here, I made my iPod Touch forget my original wireless settings I still couldn't get onto the network with the new security enabled. I decided to try changing the channel back to 6 and connected right away. I hope this helps somebody save a few minutes trying to figure out what's happening, apparently, iPod Touch doesn't like to play on channel 11(?). In addition to the good suggestions already on this page, I hope I was able to help at least one person as a way of paying my dues to the ones here that headed me in the right direction.

The trick to get 64-bit WEP working on a Linksys BEFW11S4 was to place a "$" dollar sign in front of the 10 hex digit WEP key #1

goofy - and I assure you this is an Apple specific issue... nothing like any other wireless product/vendor I have worked with as a networking professional

Anonymous said...

How to solve the annoying problem
for linksys wrt 120:

1) Go to firefox/Internet Explorer
2) Type in the ip address of your computer
2.1) To find ip address
- go to start--> all programs --> accesories --> command prompt --> type in "ipconfig" ...there you will find your ip address
3) Type in that ip address (eg. 19X.16X.X.X -|X could be any number) as you would a website
4) You will be asked an username and password
4.1) Your username is "admin"
--Your password is the one you made up during the installation of your router (this may be the hardest part of the process ><)
5) Go to the "Wireless" tab, then underneath you will see a "Wireless Security" option. Click on that.
6) You will see "Security Mode"...etc..
6.1) On the "Security Mode" option make sure it is "WPA2 Personal"
7) Change the "passphrase" to the password you entered to access this webpage
8) Click on "Save Settings"
9) You will see another option under the tabs called "Wireless MAC Filter". Click on that.
10) You might see disabled or enabled. Make sure it is DISABLED.
11) Click on "Save Settings"
12) Turn off your ipod touch. I assume you know how this is done.
13) Turn on your ipod touch. I assume you know how this is done.
14) Enter your info anywhere...Safari...the wi-fi options...etc
14.1) If you still have problems...calm down
14.2) I read something about holding the middle most button on the router itself for 10 seconds...so try that
15) refer to (6.1) Change the Security Mode to "WPA Personal"
16) Click on "Save Settings"
17) Try entering info on itouch again
18) Hopefully it works and you can breathe.
19) Have fun and download your heart out from itunes.

Couldn't connect to my own network after we redid our network. I have a Belkin router. Instead of typeing in our network password, I typed in the 26 number/letter passcode that is in on our WEP security. It worked.

BrooklineTom said...

My daughter's iPod touch simply won't connect to my netgear router/gateway while the router enforces 128-bit WEP encoding.

The "passphrase" doesn't work. The 26 character hex key-1 doesn't work, with or without a leading "$" and whether the alphas are upper or lower case.

It works just fine with security disabled on the router/gateway.

Everything else on the local network works just fine. Many people come and go, their devices all work just fine.

No, I am not ready to force the several dozen other visitors whose devices are working just fine to change over to WPA that they may or may not support.

In short, Apple has sold my daughter a piece of hardware that works ONLY when the entire world is willing to do things "The Apple Way".

Sorry, guys, but APPLE IS EVIL. This kind of garbage is why so many people hate Apple, no matter how much glitzy hype, fancy stores, and movie product placements Apple buys.

These devices DON'T WORK.

For all you guys who are still having problems..
The trick to get connected is very easy!
On your router wireless settings page, put MAC filtering ON. Then add the wi-fi mac address of the itouch in that page, and save.
Now you'll be able to connect without any problems, with or without password!
Good Luck!

Okay, I tried everything, read all of the comments on this forum and finally figured it out. Are you ready? I reset my router(which is on signal 6) to manufacturer settings. Put the disc in it came with. Then went through basically putting all the old info in like password and ssid, anyway the only difference i did was set it to a WEP Key. it has a 26 digit code, just use the one it gives you. It's still gonna give you security but not to the point where it won't let anything in. I have a psp, ps3 and the ipod touch was the only one that couldn't get through when i was using a WPA key. Now it does and I love it. It's works.

I clicked on forget network. I think I tried all tricks in the site and nothing works - not even taking all security off. It finds the router name but won't connect. I can connect to neighbors wireless when outside. For the love of god, connecting the ipod to the internet at home should be easier! I have netgear MR814 v3 router. any final suggestions?

Just thought I may be a little helpful to the Mac users. I spent countless hours trying to figure out why my ipod said that I was connected but still had the pad lock symbol after entering the correct password. Might I add I am using a broadband-to-go air card from Virgin Mobile. What I did was simple...I opened my system preferences, clicked on security, clicked on firewall, then I (your choice) clicked on set access for specific services or applications then added safari. Wahlah! This was easy. I'm not sure if this will work with Macbook Pro, or any other apple devices, but it is worth the try. If you choose to you can select to allow all incoming connections. to each his own. I hope this was helpful.

The first time you connect with WEP to the Ipod 2nd G it gives a large window where you type the paswrd and it works. Later it dowsn't connect but a smaller window appears - you can't type in the paswrd, it doesn't work. I normally leave it for a while, restart the Ipod and eventually the large window appears again and it works.

Maybe you guys should stop trying to connect to your routers with it automatically retreiving settings such as DNS, DHCP Settings..
When you Clear Settings it wipes out old or bad automatically retreived information. Possibly due to when your iPhone/iPad/iTouch connects to your router for the first time it automatically assigns you an ip address and when your devices tries to connect to your router it tries to use the same first one, when your router flushed its DNS/DHCP Settings and assigned a new ip address.. not that this is the problem, but an example. I dont have a iWhatever but I keep my brothers network that has an iPhone 4GS and iPad connected and never has issues, because in the router i looked at the iPhone and iPad MAC Address (with MAC Address, no 2 devices are made with the same addresses so it's secure.) and assigned a permanent LAN Subnetted IP (192.168.001.00x) so when device w MAC address xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx connects, assign it to ip 192.168.001.00x). i gave my sister in law the DNS and DHCP Server Address and the iPad and iPhone's default IP Address and told her to enter them in the connection settings (If you can I'm sure she did). This way, Connection Settings are consistant and only need reset if you change them... Never had a problem connecting any device to a wifi except for a Nintendo Wii using WPA2-PSK. Fuckin thing just didn't work, changed to WEP and fine. WEP 104/128(same thing)-bit has a 26 character key of HEX digits (0-9/A-F) so thats pretty secure. i have seen some routers able to go to 256-bit but most devices dont support WEP codes that long. i think the Wii only supports 40/64(same thing)-bit 10 character HEX WEP code. Even still a brute force attack on a 40-bit code (10 digit isn't really 64-bit, it's 40-bit plus the 24-bit initialization vector, just as 104-bit plus 24-bit is 128-bit. you don't have to worry about setting the init. vector). I think it had to be a bugged aged firmware with the router. updated firmware and WPA2 worked fine in both AEK and PSK modes.
