Ipod Touch WiFi (Wireless Troubleshooting) Part 2

Since yesterday I received 29 emails JUST regarding Ipod Touch Wireless Issues. So I thought I’d give it another shot.

First if you haven't read this post please do Ipod touch wifi troubleshooting

As some of you know I used to work for a Technical Support, Wireless and Internet Connection Cable Company, therefore I know every single trick to get you online and that's what I’m here for.

Here are some other tricks to get you connected with your Ipod Touch:

The method with restarting modem/router and turning back on ipod touch didn't work?

How about this!

Turn OFF every single PC, turn off your cable/dsl modem, turn off your router and your Ipod Touch. Got it? Cool!

Now turn on your Modem first wait till it syncs (30-45sec), Turn on your router wait till it syncs with modem (30sec), then turn on your ipod touch!

There is one difference between turning OFF your Ipod Touch and Sleep Mode.
Sleep Mode is when you click on the button on top and Ipod Touch is off, well I wasn't talking about that.
To TURN OFF your Ipod Touch you have to HOLD that button for about 5-7sec and then move the red bar to the right. To turn it back on repeat the step above by holding button for 5-7sec!

Hope this helps if not please email me at ilovetoargue AT gmail DOT com and I will try to help you personally!

P.S. I will be moving this week to my new home and I will not be able to respond to you right away so don't feel like I don't care about you all!

I will create a video on how to connect to your wireless connection so you have a visual of what you can do your self and why stuff does not work.

So please subscribe to my RSS feeds or Email Notification on Top Right Menu.

Thank you.

When i enter all my info in to the touch when i exit out it changes all the info i entered in? It shows i am on a network but when i try and load a page it says cant find server? Please help

Thanks for the support offered by your blog. What I found on another blog was the fact that iPod touch appears not to like WEP security. It allows as many have identified access to your Wi-Fi network but does not allow receipt or transmission sending the highly frustrating and despairing "safari cannot find server".
I changed my security to WPA2-PSK and all works fine now. I had to make a few modifications where my Netgear card in the computer did not configure for anything other than wep but fortunately I had not used the Netgear USB that came with my more recent Wi-Fi router and it works now a treat.

Hope this is helpful because all electronics are useless until they are correctly configured.

when i go into wifi, i click on my network and it makes a check mark and says that the network has 3 bars, but when i go out of it, it doesnt show any bars by "iPod" and i cant connect to any internet.

help?

Anonymous said...

still didn't work :( regardless of me using wpa or wep security :(

Same here. I've reset my ipod several times, turned off my router, etc. and still nothing. When I go to settings I go to wi-fi, make sure it's on (it always is) and click on my network and a check appears next to it. But no bars appear next to "ipod" at the top left. And every time I try safari , youtube, and mail none of them work. Please put up your video as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance.

Had some initial problems getting my iPod Touch connected to my home network which is configured in a non-standard way.

I have a Linksys WRT54G WiFi Access Point/Router. DHCP is off (all my inside LAN addys are manual, my WAN addys are DHCP). WEP 128bit is On. All WiFi MACs must be in a permitted list.

On the Router: Added iPod Touch MAC to the Permit list.

On the iPod Touch: Entered the IP address, net mask, and DNS information.

When queried for the WiFi password I entered the first WEP Key (just the 26 hex digits...do not include a "$"), NOT the Passphrase.

Once done, it connected to the WiFi net and worked fine. Curious to see how hard it will be to connect to the WiFi HotSpot at work which we provide for our customers and how the iPod Touch behaves as I move from home WiFi to work WiFi.

I'm trying to use my MBP 2.4Ghz/4Gb as an AirPort base station for my 16Mb jailbroken iPod Touch. I've had no luck whether I use WEP or not. I've followed all the advise that has appeared on the net to no avail. I've asked Apple and they really haven't solved my problem -- I thought that the problem was the MBP Sharing setup since I can get the Touch to talk to my PowerBook G4, when setup in the exact same way. The MBP setup was checked, by an Apple repair centre, and seemed to functioning well.

Note: This problem was occurring before the Touch was jailbroken. The Touch connects with no problems to other wireless networks.

Please help.

hey whats up, im having some trouble connecting to the internet with my ipod touch. it was working perfectly last week and this past weekend and just a couple of days ago it just stopped connecting. when i go to my settings and to my wi-fi connections, the wirless connection pops up, but when i click on it, it tells me "unable to connect to this network". I dont have a router, but it was working perfectly a week ago. and now it tells me wirless connection, but it wont let me connect to the internet, it tells me the same thing over and over again, "unable to connecet to this network". so anyway can you please help me with situation ASAP. heres my email: alonzo_rachel@yahoo.com
thanks so much.

Ok - here's the deal. When i first got it i was able to connect to my secure network AND any other open network. A few months ago i downloaded new iPod firmware and since then i cannot connect to ANY network EXCEPT the APple network in the store. Each time i go in, they say: "Oh lookie - it's working!" But it's not. I dont see why i have to jump through hoops to do all the tweeks you recommend, when the darn thing was working perfectly not 6 months ago. My thinking is the firmware upgrade messed it up.

I got an ipod touch for Christmas and I am having BIG trouble connecting to the internet. When i go Settings> General> About> i have a wi-fi address, but when i look at my connection it has no entries for the ip address, subnet mask, etc. I tried to follow the directions on apple.com about the resolution to the problem but it didn't work. It says something like forget this network or renew lease and my ipod doesn't ever say that. Please help me out if you can!

I'm having the same problem as everyone else. What to do when I'm apparently connected to my network but then I can't surf the net because I'm "not connected to the internet"? I've tried resetting the router (unplugging it twice) and still nothing. HELP!!!

Had the same problem. have you guys tried his suggestion where you have to turn off your ipod and not just put it on sleep mode? Hold the top button for 5 secs and turn it on again. That solved the problem for me.

Anonymous said...

Following all your suggestions still did not allow my daughter to connect to her wireless network although she could other networks. (She started experiencing problems after she change her security password on her router).

I found the following suggestion that worked;

"Reset the network settings for your iPod touch or iPhone
In some cases you may need to reset the network settings for your device. To do this, choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings"

This can be found at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

switched it off then on again and everything a-ok - thanks a lot!

My daughter's ipod touch worked fine with wi fi, but suddenly two weeks ago it stopped finding our wi fi. I unplugged everything, and now it finds it sometimes, but we still can't get on says 'unable to join'. I have re-set the wi fi on the touch back to the manufacturers settings and keyed in the SSID and Key, but still no joy. Can you help?

I had the same problem with everyone else. My son's Ipod Touch would not take the WEP 40/64-bit hex digits as password. It kept saying I had the incorrect password.

Then I read wmw's post that Ipod Touch does not like WEP. I switched the router encryption to WPA and use a passphrase instead - it worked! Thanks, wmw!

Anonymous said...

Our ipod Touch's wi-fi connection was very unreliable. Finally upgraded my router (D-link rangebooster N Dual Band). Now everything works beautifully. And yes, definitely stay away from the old WEP encryption. Use WPA + a passphrase.

i typed in the wep code for my network and after that it has a check mark be it but it just goes away after a few seconds and i dnt hav wifi on my touch, what should i do?

AT LAST. My cable connection went out yesterday, and when it returned my ipod wouldn't connect for anything. I fought with this for hours and finally found the solution.

Ok, so if resetting your ipod and changing the encryption works for you, great. Those didn't work for me at all. In fact here's the whole list of what DIDN'T work:

* resetting the router
* erasing and resetting the ipod
* turning wifi on and off
* changing encryption
* changing network keys
* updating router firmware

...and about a million other things. And it makes sense none of those would work, because this is a network connection settings problem. So fear not, your ipod is NOT broken.

There is an ipod app out there called Ping Lite, and this was useful in testing my theory (it won't help you connect, but is useful for testing). I knew that the internet was working because I could ping 4.2.2.2. What's happening is a DNS problem--the ipod is somehow getting a bad DNS from the DHCP server.

So! The solution was as simple as going to going into your wifi settings in the ipod, and changing the DNS to 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3. (Both of those, with the comma). Those are known good DNS and everything connects fine now.

Hope this helps some people.

Hi, i just got my ipod touch, its an 8 gig by the way, and the only available connection i have is a locked one. It shows its IP and submask and client ID but nothing else. When i try and connect to it, it asks for a password, which i dont know.

How do i find this password?

heyy my iPod just stopped working with my wifi connection. it will pick up other ones. but on the one in my house it shows that there is service, but wont let me do anything requiring the internet. it says "safari cannot find the server"

For attaching to my home wireless connection, should i use DHCP, BootP, or Static? Also, do i need to fill out the IP address, subnet mask, and router fields?

whats the password for "badsecurity212" or "3928"

A potential solution: I was having the same issue as many of you. My iPod Touch was detecting my wireless network, it would show as connected, but when I tried to go into the browser, it would say that I wasn't connected. I remembered having a similar issue with my Wii and the solution was to update my router firmware.

I have a WRT54G v. 5 and I updated to the latest firmware (this is done by connecting to the router control panel. There should be instructions on how to do this if you don't already know) and everything works perfectly now.

I hope that this will help someone out there.

I finally hit a breakthrough on getting my WiFi to work with my I touch. Before you enter the 26 digit WEP number into the password prompt. Go to "settings" on the itouch Tap General > About then scroll down to Wi-Fi Address. Then take that Wi-Fi Address and go into your Linksys security set-up and edit the MAC filter list, adding the itouch's Wi-Fi address to the MAC filter list. Save settings and then go back and retry the 26 digit password.

It worked for me.

My parents just got an updated modem for their wireless internet and now I cannot connect to the WiFi. I go to the settings page, select Wi-Fi, choose the network, enter the password, and it still won't connect to the new Wi-Fi. It was working fine with the old modem. Any suggestions?

Unknown said...

A couple of things to try after all else has failed. #1, Check your router to see if it is blocking by MAC address. If you have tried everything else this is often the culprit. I didn't think mine was set up to do this but it turned out it was.

Also, you can try using Google's open DNS servers on your ipod: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Those will be faster than whatever DHCP automatically assigns (and it sometimes gets it wrong, which will also cause connection fails).

Hi there, I have a 32gb Ipod touch 32gb 3g & it has been fine for the last 3 months, but I can not access safari but can access utube maps etc - please help.

I had the same connect trouble with Ipod touch 32 G model and exchanged for a new one and had the same trouble.It showed I was connected but I wasn't.I changed my router setting from b and g to just b and now it works fine.It did not work with just g. Router is a netgear. The signal strength is not 3 bars but it works fine. Before I had 3 bars and all I has were fits.

Anonymous said...

I had the same problem, there was the wireless icon on the top left hand of the screen but when accessing Safari I would have a connection error. I notice in the wireless network that my IP address wasnt correct.

To resolve the problem: I selected access another network and retyped in the network & password. This worked I guess I must have typed in the initial password wrong. The iTouch pretended to access the network (never gave a error message) but would fail on accessing the internet.

Sometimes connection failures happen because the wifi signal is N, and so far as I know the itouch can only deal with G. Another thing to keep in mind.

I've done all the checks, all the shut down & re-boot routines. My touch says I have a strong wi-fi connection. When I try to gmail or go online, I get an error message saying I'm not connected.

The frustration is that when I first set up, I got several messages from gmail & a test message from my laptop. Then, having turned off & re-booting, the problems started.

Any ideas please.
