I checked apple discussion board for ipod touch saw many wi-fi questions. So I thought this is not a trick but it is a tip on how to setup your ipod touch for wireless.
First ask your self do you have secured or unsecured wireless connection?
If secured:
1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Wi-FI
3. Click on Your Wireless
4. Punch in your WEP key
5. Connect to it.
If NOT Secured
Follow all steps above except no.4

Some of the time my iPod connects to my Wifi, but 95% of the time this does not happen. It always shows the bars like it does have service, but every time i try to go online it says "Cannot open Page Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet." On DHCP it shows the IP address and the Subnet Mask, but never the router or the DNS. It only works when it shows the DNS.
Folks, this problem is obviously not specific to any particular iPod touch. And it's not a case of some difficult networking situation. Something is obviously flawed on a number of iPods.
I got my touch 3 weeks ago. I was able to get a wifi connection at home a few times, but haven't had success anywhere else. Even on non-password protected wifi hotspots.

OK so i have my Ipod touch, and when i first got it, i tried to set up the wifi by going to settings>wifi> and then i chose my network. It permitted me to enter a password, but i did not know it at the time. After a few attempts it now wont let me retry to enter a password, it simply says "Unable to Join V network" What should/can i do to fix thiss
i just got my touch with the 2.2 upgrade. whenever i try to get on internet i have FULL bars and when i click on safari and try to go to a website is says it cant because safari is no connected to the internet?

you do not have to reset your entire ipod touch.
-go to settings
-go to general
-at the very bottom it says reset
-only choose to reset your networks
and i just figured out how to get the internet to work. i'm not sure who said it because i read all the comments but what you have to do is..
-go to settings
-go to wifi
-choose which ever computer you are trying to use
-when it asks for the password it is th WEP number (that is on the back of the router if you don't have it written down)
it should connect no problem after that. so thank you to whomever said that because after frustration from the other comments yours worked instantly.

Once that was done all was working well except I cannot access the internet now. I have the correct password and the icon that designates wifi is there but it says I still cannot connect. I don't think it is the router because we have laptops and things working with it as well. Could it have had something to do with the restore?? Please help. Thanks.

if you are having problems connecting to the home wi-fi and it says unable to connect you might want to double check that your password is your security key strength password and it is case sensitive

Hey! I can connect to my router, and it says i have a full strength signal. Despite this, when i go on to safari, it says "You cannot connect because you are not connected to the internet" (or something along those lines). I spoke to apple this morning, and they said that if your ip address begins with 169, it is a common problem for it not to work. They suggested i speak to my service provider to see if they can change my ip address.
I did so, and my service provider (tiscali) said they have nothing to do with apple, so they said it was not there problem. After 4 hours on the phone to apple, they suggested i take it back to the store i bought it from.
So to clarify, if your ip address begins with 169, you may as well get your ipod touch packed and ready to return.

After buying two ipods and having one work perfectly with wifi at home and the other not I spent a ton of time trying to figure it out. Unfortunately, none of the comments here seemed to help so I thought I would post the solution that worked for me.
First, the problem I was having like many others involved not obtaining a valid ip address from my router. It would simply state that it was connected yet unable to surf, etc.
Now the thing that made it work. I went to my router's address and in the MAC address filtering section I manually added the address for the ipod not working. After doing this and joining the network using my password (WPA security code) it connected, recognized my ipod and all is well.
I have no idea why this is as the other ipod worked flawlessly right out of the box by simply entering the password and joining the network but could only connect with this one using no security.
Hope this helps someone out there as it is quite frustrating.

I gave my daughter an IPOD touch for Christmas. Connecting it to the net seems to be a problem. Today I update the firmware of my wireless router. I powercycled every part of my network. But the IPOD doesnt want to get connected.
When I got ride of the security on the router I could connect. But of course a wireless router without any security is not done these days.
Any tips for me?

Wow, we all had the same problem. I could not connect the wifi either. BUT NOW I CAN!!! When it asks for your "password", it is not actually your password, it actually wants you to enter your "WEP Key". The only way I had my key # was because I still have my paperwork from Verizon Fios. If you don't know it I suggest calling your service provider or it may be on your router, I don't know. But it is your WEP Key and NOT the password. Woohoo ... I'm off to check out my touch FINALLY!!!!!
My Touch was working fine on wi-fi for a few days, however it seemed that if you went on Youtube or anything that required a large download to load, the internet would abruptly cut out. After a few days, I tried my luck at downloading an app using the app store on the touch. Halfway through the download, the internet cut out, and ever since then it has never been able to connect. When you go to settings, there is the wifi connection, normally saying "Not Connected". Now, that option is grayed out and simply says "no wifi". Can somebody tell me what to do?

I am having the same problem it seems everyone else is having. My ipod touch will connect via wifi any other place but at my home. If I change my router to an unsecure network my itouch connects just fine. Although if my network is secure which is how I like it my itouch recognizes the network and asks for a password to join but when I input the correct password it still will not connect to the network. I tried entering my encryption key as the password and that did not help. In the wifi settings on the itouch I am not sure where to try entering the key as the only spaces that allow for me to input data in are the DNS field, The Search Domain field or client ID field. HELP

I have the same issues as everyone else and I have tried every single help tip I've seen in here.
Regarding the default IP Address beginning with the numbers 169, etc. How do you reset it so it stays put? I put in my real IP address and it just goes back to the 169. Is there something I can do to change it permanently?
Oh, and of course the ipod works in the apple store. BUT, when I was there last week for my one-to-one, the fellow helped me get the update for $9.95 and guess what? ITunes store took my money but the install never happened. A message window came up saying there was a "problem downloading the iPod software...you do not have permission to access the required resource." Now, do you wonder if this is related to the other issue? I have no idea and my one-to-one Mac fellow could not figure out how to fix the download. MAC needs to stop behaving like they're so superior to PC and start being more helpful.
So, to re-cap --how do I stop this 169 IP default address and put my real one in for good? :(

WiFinder will not go on my iPod touch. Neither will WiFi. It worked to go on my brother's, but he did it on his own computer. It did not go on mine or my sister's. I've got a 2ndGen iPod Touch and I'm running MobileFiles Pro. The APP is telling me that I can transfer files from my PC to my Touch through my wifi connection. I need to type in a certain http: (i.e. my touch ip address) and then the connection should be made. Unfortunately when I do my web-browser doesn't seem to recognize the address (or device) and I can't make the connection. Am I doing something wrong ? Does anyone have any other suggestions ? Supposedly I can transfer files between my PC and Touch by typing in the IP address of my Touch. But my web-browser doesn't recognize the address or device. Is there something that I'm not doing ? Just purchase the iPod Touch. Unable to connect to network is the error message I get when trying to connect to wifi at home. Was able to connect at my brothers house, so I know it is most likely my wireless network at home. Using Linksys, secure mode (although unsecure mode won't work either) when I select my Linksys network on the touch and ">" I don't see any entries in the IP, subnet,router,dns etc fields. My network mode is set to BG-mixed, SSID broadcase is enabled, Security mode is WPA personal, encryption is TKIP, Wireless MAC filter is enabled (can't see iPod's MAC) (even tried to disable without any luck)

After much frustration and reading a few of the comments on here..I now have the Internet on my IPod. I was experiencing the problem of entering in the correct password for my WiFi and always got the couldn't connect thing. So after reading someones comment saying that it doesnt want your password it wants your network security key I decided to try it. So I tried it figuring it wasn't going to work and IT DID! IT DOESN'T WANT YOUR PASSWORD IT WANTS YOUR NETWORK SECURITY KEY.Just make sure you enter it EXACTLY like it appears on your computer. So I want to thank whoever said that. Hopefully this will help all of you guys out there experiencing this problem!

I have embarrassingly had my iPod Touch for well over a year now, and still haven't sorted out the wifi. I have used wifi with no problem in many places but at home I am stumped! The signal is there after I put in my WEP Key, yet every time I try to check e-mail or go to Safari, I get the same 'Safari is not connected to the internet' or 'connection to the server ... failed'.

ok, just got my ipod touch and im already having internet problems. at my house, under settings > wi-fi > "HOME" network. i cannot connect, there is no lock icon next to it so im assuming i can use it. also, there is no IP adress listed or subnet mask etc. also, on the commuter rail train's free public wi-fi, it says i can connect, and it does, but when i open up safari, youtube, facebook, etc. it says im not connected. even though i clearly am. same thing happens at school with their wireless internet, so please help!

Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet." Why is it not working? I tried reseting the ipod and other ways to fix it but it still wont connect. Can someone please help me?
when i go to my wifi, i'll select my network, and enter my password. then click "join" all the ipod tells me is "unable to join network" why is this? i can join other networks just fine. just not mine. what can i do?

My Ipod touch previously said it was connected to the wi-fi but could not use the wireless features such as safari, app store and youtube. this is how i fixed it.
first i connected it to my wi-fi. it has a mac address filter so i put my ipod touch on the allowed list.
then however, it would not use wireless features.
this was becos my router also had a filter, so i had to allow myself there. afterwards evrything works fine

I am having trouble connecting to my iPod touch, I know there is nothing wrong with my wireless connection because my laptop is working fine on the internet.
I dont know what a WEP address is either. It shows a locked symbol and i dont know if thats good, or bad.
My iPod says i am connected but it won't let me get on iTunes, weather channel, mail, facebook, etc.
Please let me know if you know the problem and tell me what i can do!

Apple gotta do sth about that! i connect to one spot then if i wanna change it to another one, it's just not working even if you got an ip! that's ridiculous. i dont know what the problem is. Maybe it's just as told before iPod gets really confused about DNSs...

I have an ipod touch. The network that I connect to has WEP. it connects just fine when i put the pass in right. The thing is that whenever I turn the touch off it takes me off the network and i have to retype the pass. Is that normal? Also sometimes i'll go into wifi settings after turning it off and it won't show the network, and the only way to get it to is if you restore the network settings

My son's 8gb Touch wireless worked fine, then suddenly stopped. It would recognise and join the network, but Safari, Youtube etc would say "not connected to the internet" or similar. Tried complete reset to no avail.All other wireless devices connected to router (Belkin 54g) with no problem. Finally sorted by, from laptop, selecting "network", right click on wireless router,select "view device webpage", and choosing "restart router" option on webpage. Lo and behold - connection restored, very happy son! Hope this helps someone.
i have a jailbroken ipod touch 1st gen... my problem was when i went to settings > wi-fi my router would show up and it would say that i was connected... but on the top left there was no wi-fi symbol, and i wasnt connected to the internet
solution, "settings > general > reset > reset network settings"

i bought my ipod, jailbroke it and put in some apps. everything works fine except for the wifi. It connect at home, but outside of it, I was only able to connect outside of the staples center. Everywhere else, even though at the top beside the word Ipod it says I have wifi, when I open safari (or any other thingy that needs wifi), it doesn't work. it says either im not connected to the internet or it cant find the server. Im suspecting that its either my jailbreaking's fault(though my cousin's jailbroken ipod works fine anywhere), the app Auto Wifi, or... dunno. Please help. Thanks

I would like to use my IPod Touch "in the field" having access to apps via the internet without being near wifi locations. I am an avid birder, plant and animal person and we travel a lot camping and the majority of the places we go there are not wifi locations. I have IBird Explorer and love it but would love to have Landscapedia and other like apps but need internet access. I recieved my IPod Touch as an early Mother's Day present and love it. I would like to access the internet from places other than wifi locations. We travel a lot, camping or if I am just out shopping, I want to be able to have access to my apps. I would like to use my maps app also but without internet access it is not any good. What can I do to get internet access for my Touch when I am not near my home or wifi locations? I can't find any information that tells me what I need to do. I have a couple of apps that I have downloaded that do not require internet and I use them alot. Wish there were more of them.

Hello, I just got my iPod Touch a few days ago and it connected to my wireless just fine for a few days and then I had it sitting for a few days and then I go to it and try to connect to my network and it says its connected but the bars at the top don't show up. When I go to Safari it says cannot connect, and I have tried reseting everything. Even clearing the hole thing out and starting all over again. I bought my ipod touch on saturday and was having no problems with it, until i tried to connect it to the internet. I went into settings and set it up with my home hub. it says that its connected to the wireless and 5 bars signal. but, when i went on safari to surf the web it says " Cannot Open Page Safari cannot open the page as it is not connected to the internet." Is this only common with certain sites like bebo and youtube? I've reseted and it made no difference at all. My Ipod recognizes the IP Address and Subnet Mask but not the rest of the needed stuff, the Wifi worked just the other day though.
My sister bought an Ipod touch and she couldn't figure out how to connect it to our Netgear router herself so she put it on open system.
However, I have a laptop that I use for EVERYTHING and a webcam, and the thought of someone being able to gain access to it all FREAKS ME OUT. So i would really like to get her hooked up. I know how to hook my laptop up, but the Ipod just won't work.
I get the whole thing (WEP hex key, the IP address, all that) except for when it asks for a DNS address(which the router is set to get automatically from ISP). I can't figure out what put it into the Ipod. There is nothing there if I change the settings (the other addresses are there but not DNS) Am I missing something?
Also, I'm not sure what the routers address is, I am assuming it doesn't mean the MAC address. Is it the address that I use when I want to configure the routers settings? I can just type it into internet explorer and it takes me to the settings and asks for the router's name and password. It looks like it wants more of an IP than a MAC address.
I'm so confused and I can't figure it out for the life of me.
Likely problem is that, like me, you are entering the WiFi gateway passphrase or password (16 characters on WEP 128). It is actually the WEP KEY that you want (26 characters hexadecimal code, without any colons)not the password or passphrase. We are on linksys gateway WUSB54G. If you come off your network connection, then connect again to your own secured network, by selecting it and pressing the "Connect" button, it takes you to the box where you can enter your "passphrase" this is then converted in the box below to a hexadecimal WEP KEY - that's what you need to enter as password on Ipod touch (26 characters in my case). Reset the ipod first, so that it requests the password afresh. Worked for us.

this is an easy fix!!!
open your router options (download the manual if you dont know how to do this) and use the WPA-PSK Security Encryption code that you set when you set up the router.
use that when ipod touch asks for the pasword, dont use your network password and it should work straight away.:) worked for me anyway. good luck.

my ipod touch was great , but then i borrowed it to a friend and now i cant get connected ! it recognizes my network, but when i trie to connect it says cannot connect to network, when i trie wi-finder , it says error -6 of -7 ,.. Sometimes it connects automaticly , then i trie to open safari and nothing happens, the connection icon on the top left corner dissapears..
and its not the strenght , cause it has 5 bars!

I just got an ipod touch a few weeks ago. I connected my wi-fi to my familys computer and it worked just fine. My parents also recently just got me a laptop (about a week after I got my ipod). I set it up and my iPod still works just fine. One night I was sitting in bed on Facebook on my ipod touch and the internet just stopped working. I checked my laptop and my brother's laptop and our family computer and they all have great internet connection. I've been struggling for a few days now trying to figure out how to get my wi-fi back. I've tried resetting the network, and turning it off and a few other tricks that were suggested but still I can't seem to connect to the wi-fi. Our house internet comes up because its the default wi-fi and when I tap it to work, a message always pops up saying "Unable to join the network "X". I'm not very tech-savvy & I need help! Thanks.

GUYS i just got my internet back from when it says " cannot connect to server" Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings! Then ur ipod will restart and then go to settings>wifi and turn it back on. AND NOW MY INTERNET WORKS AGAIN :D

Make sure you don't have Mac Address filtering on , or if you do add your iTouch's mac address the mac address is found in Settings /General /About - Wi-Fi Address
I enter my WEP key as my password and it does not connect. I have 128 bit encryption, so the key length is 26 characters. Why won't it work? Is there another way to enter the WEP key?
Hey All-
I saw this in a post already, but I just want to reiterate.
I suggest pulling your router description up on the screen. If you are unaware of your router username and password, search the internet for your type of router and it's default username and paswords. If this doesn't work, you'll have to reset it via the button in the back.
Once you get in, see what type of connection you have setup on your network. The connection I just troubleshooted was a WEP, and there was a password assigned to this WEP network that was a string of 26 letters and numbers. Sounds strange, but this was the password the iPod touch needed to get on the network. Make sure you capitalize and distinguish between zeros and the letter 'O'.
The most curious thing I discovered was that when I put the wrong password into the iPod touch, it didn't tell me the password was invalid. So for the longest time, I kept putting in the same password and it looked like I was connected...but I wasnt.
Once the WEP password had been input, and I refreshed the home page on the Safari browser, it worked like clockwork.
Good luck. If you have a WEP connection ( or just discovered through this process that you did!) you should be off to the races.

I need help on setting up wifi on my ipod. I have a wireless which works fine on laptop. But on my laptop i have to connect to a network using pppoe connection, its nothing but a userud ( my landline number) and a local passowrd. Without this the internet also do not work on laptop.
But in Ipod i only get option of entering the security key which i have already done. There is no option of connect using PPoE connection. Please help.

I hit mine go to log in type my password and it says unable to join the network XXXXXX . And wen i go to setting, wifi, XXXXXX account it doesnt let me use the "join" or "enter" tab. WTF??" So i been very displeased. Can you help me??

i have att uverse and entered the dns number into router line on ipod then entered wireless network key (located on side of my att wireless hub)when prompted for password and it worked! i have been jacking with this for days trying to figure it out. I am finally happy!

I bought my I-Pod Touch just today, and I'm at home trying to connect, and it'll give me one connection, but it'll say "unable to connect...dismiss?"

i have an ipod touch but i have problems with the network settings. I have an IP but when i enter it in the static option it changes the bootip and dhcp but after a few seconds it detects new ip addresses. what should i do to make my IP permenent for a specific wireless connection? please help!
every time i try to connect to the network that is listed on my ipod's network screen, it says it's unable to connect. and all of the infromation on the network is blank. how can i fix this?
